The Merry Maidens

The Merry Maidens stone circle is adjacent to the B3315 Newlyn to Treen road, and can be easily accessed from a lay-by at the western corner of the field.

It's one of the few 'True' stone circles in Cornwall as its perfectly circular. Though there are currently 19 stones in the circle, it is thought to have originally been 18.
In the 19th Century restoration work on the circle was carried out incorrectly and the original even spacing between the uprights was ignored and some stones ended up in completely the wrong place.

The Merry Maidens Stone Circle

The stone circle is also known as Dans maen (dancing stones) Rosemodress Circle and Boleigh Circle, and they are commonly associated with folk tales of Dancing maidens turned to stone for merrymaking on the sabbath.
